First I need to emphasize there’s a difference between something being the best for technical reasons and something else being the best for an individual for personal reasons. This article is an attempt to reason that while kde plasma is technically the best DE available on Linux, it may also not be the best DE for your personal needs.
So what do I mean by “the best”?
Kde plasma is the most customizable, full featured, modern, everything but the kitchen sink DE a Linux user has access to, all while simultaneously being one of the lightest and least resource hungry.
While all of that is true, I also understand not everyone wants more out of their DE. That’s when plasma isn’t necessarily the best one for everyone’s use case. Some folks might want Gnome’s very MacOS like ‘use it our way or don’t use it’ interface. Others may prefer the very Windows 7 like XFCE approach, or Cinnamon’s Windows 95ish feel. There’s nothing wrong with preferring any of these. Some of these may even do a particular thing better than plasma.
Simply by adding a theme, you can use the customization tools within plasma to make it look, act, and feel like any other DE. This isn’t true of any of the others. Plasma is fast, snappy, and very stable. I know it’s not for everyone, but I highly recommend to everyone that they at least try it.
